Healing Is Not Just Regulation
Why spiritual bypassing is so culturally seductive...
There is a version of healing culture that teaches people how to become more functional inside systems that are still harming them.
Breathe through it. Regulate your nervous system. Protect your energy. Stay positive. Detach. Let go. Manifest differently.
Some of this language emerges from real wisdom. But much of it has been absorbed into a culture that increasingly treats discomfort itself as pathology rather than information.
And so people learn to override themselves in increasingly sophisticated ways.
What gets called healing can sometimes become another form of dissociation. A way of managing emotion without fully metabolizing experience. A way of staying “regulated” while remaining profoundly disconnected from grief, rage, instinct, embodiment, and reality itself.
When Healing Becomes Adaptation
What makes bypassing so culturally seductive is that it allows people to remain emotionally functional without becoming disruptive.
You can stay productive without fully grieving. Stay agreeable without touching anger. Stay spiritually “evolved” without confronting the conditions that are exhausting you in the first place.
And in that sense, bypassing does not only disconnect us from pain.
It disconnects us from discernment.
Because the body is often the first thing to recognize when something is wrong, and it does so long before the conscious mind is willing to admit it. It interrupts performances the psyche can no longer sustain. It refuses realities organized entirely around endurance, over-functioning, and self-abandonment.
This is part of why embodiment becomes so threatening within systems built on disconnection.
A person in contact with themselves becomes harder to extract from. Harder to manipulate. Harder to convince that exhaustion is normal, that resentment is maturity, that chronic self-abandonment is love.
Embodiment interrupts that.
Not because it makes life comfortable, but because it makes life real again.
